Ingredients

Scale

For the Patties

  • 2 lbs Ground beef (80/20 blend for best flavor)
  • 1/2 cup Breadcrumbs (Plain or seasoned)
  • 1 Egg (Beaten)
  • 1 Onion (Finely diced)
  • 2 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Black pepper

For the Gravy

  • 3 tbsp Butter (Salted or unsalted)
  • 3 tbsp All-purpose flour (For thickening gravy)
  • 2 cups Beef broth (Low sodium preferred)
  • 1 cup Heavy cream
  • 1 Onion (Sliced)
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Mix Patties: In a large bowl, gently combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, finely diced onion, salt, and black pepper. Mix just until combined to avoid tough patties.
  2. Shape & Rest: Form the mixture into 6 to 8 oval-shaped patties. Allow them to rest at room temperature while you prepare the gravy base; this helps them hold together better during cooking.
  3. Brown Patties: Heat an oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the patties for 3 to 4 minutes on each side until they develop a golden crust. Remove the patties and set aside.
  4. Make Gravy: Using the same skillet, melt butter and sauté the sliced onions until soft and translucent. Sprinkle in the flour and stir continuously for about 2 minutes to cook out raw flour taste. Slowly whisk in the beef broth and heavy cream, stirring constantly to create a smooth gravy. Add garlic powder and season to taste.
  5. Bake Casserole: Nestle the browned patties carefully into the onion gravy in the skillet. Cover the skillet tightly with a lid or foil and bake in the oven preheated to 350°F (175°C) for 45 minutes. Remove the cover and bake for an additional 15 minutes to thicken the gravy and brown the top slightly.
  6. Rest & Serve: Take the skillet out of the oven and let the casserole rest for 10 minutes before serving. This resting time allows the flavors to meld and the gravy to thicken further.

Notes

  • Use an 80/20 ground beef blend to ensure the patties are juicy and flavorful.
  • Breadcrumbs help bind the patties; you can substitute with crushed crackers if preferred.
  • Letting patties rest before browning enhances texture and prevents them from breaking.
  • For a thicker gravy, increase flour to 4 tablespoons or reduce liquid slightly.
  • Serve with mashed potatoes or egg noodles to soak up the delicious gravy.
