A delightful and easy-to-make Caramel Apple Bark combining the sweetness of caramel and chocolate, the tartness of Granny Smith apples, and a salty crunch from pretzels and sea salt. Perfect for a crunchy, sweet snack or a festive treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Chocolate Base

  • 11/4 cup chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil

Fruit and Toppings

  • 1 Granny Smith apple
  • 35 mini pretzel twists
  • Flaky sea salt (optional, for topping)

Caramel Sauce

  • 15 soft Werther’s caramels
  • 1/2 tablespoon heavy cream

Instructions

  1. Prepare Apple: Peel the apple if desired. Wash thoroughly, then chop into small pieces.
  2. Soak Apple: In a large bowl, mix 1 cup of room-temperature water with 1/2 teaspoon salt. Add the diced apple pieces and let them sit for 5 to 10 minutes. Drain in a colander, rinse under cold water, and shake off excess water. Pat the apple pieces very dry with paper towels to ensure no moisture remains which can affect the bark setting properly.
  3. Melt Chocolate: In a small microwave-safe bowl, combine the chocolate chips and coconut oil. Microwave in 20-second intervals, stirring after each until the mixture is just melted and smooth.
  4. Separate Chocolate: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Pour all but 1/4 cup of the melted chocolate onto the parchment and spread it evenly with the back of a spoon. Transfer the reserved 1/4 cup of melted chocolate into a zip-top bag, seal it tightly without air, and snip off a tiny corner for drizzling later.
  5. Add Pretzels and Apple: Arrange the mini pretzel twists in a single layer over the melted chocolate, followed by sprinkling the thoroughly dried apple pieces evenly on top.
  6. Melt Caramel: In a small pot over low heat, combine the Werther’s caramels and heavy cream. Stir constantly until just melted and smooth, taking care not to overheat.
  7. Drizzle Caramel and Chocolate: Drizzle the melted caramel sauce over the bark evenly. Then drizzle the reserved chocolate from the bag on top of the caramel. Optionally sprinkle with flaky sea salt to enhance flavors.
  8. Chill The Bark: Place the baking sheet in the freezer and chill until the chocolate is firm, approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour.
  9. Serve: Break or cut the bark into pieces and enjoy immediately. For best texture and flavor, consume the same day straight from the fridge. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 1 month, as this bark does not hold well at room temperature.

Notes

  • Peeling the apple is optional depending on your texture preference.
  • Drying the apple pieces thoroughly is crucial to prevent the chocolate from seizing.
  • If you prefer, substitute Werther’s caramels with other caramel candies of similar consistency.
  • Use flaky sea salt sparingly for a balanced sweet and salty flavor.
  • Store the finished bark in the freezer to maintain optimal texture and freshness.
